Re: Future Classic Cars - What's yours?
I'm looking at a 993 Cab hopefully this weekend, although it seems too good to be true for the price of £12k with fsh when they are all £25k+ - gotta be something wrong with it!!!

Re: Future Classic Cars - What's yours?
you're right ted - worth a fair bit more than i thought
makes the annual pain of writing that cheque to the garage worth it!

Nice one Aldgate I think you'll be surprised at it's value now.

I saw a perfect Renault Fuego the other day. No idea how it survived, as I think very few made it out of the 80s! Sounds like a weird choice I know, but it actually looked fantastic.

Re: Future Classic Cars - What's yours?
you've had a result with that ted
i've got an 1985 SL420 which i bought for £7000 seven years ago
i get it serviced every year at a classic car specialist near maldon but there's always something i need to pay for despite only doing 1,000 miles a year
last one was replacing a couple of steering mounts at £900 a pop
it's pretty much in mint condition now so hopefully i'll make a few quid if i ever sell it
it's a lovely car though - nothing better in the summer than wrestling the roof off and driving around praying no-one dents the chrome!

Re: Future Classic Cars - What's yours?
I've had my 1984 SL 500 107 for nearly 4 years now I take it out on a sunny day round Frinton & Walton but have only done 600 miles since I bought it.
I paid £8000 for it and is now said to be worth a minimum of £13000 Yearly cost is around £400 so I'm very happy.

Re: Future Classic Cars - What's yours?
Peckham - thing is the gamble with the 'anything major' bit.

I had a 996 C2 Cab for 4 years and swerved the bore score/IMS horror stories but it still cost enough to service/maintain.

Depends what you define return as - some people exclude time/labour costs in their return costs if they are handy enough to work on cars themselves.

Re: Future Classic Cars - What's yours?
The new Focus RS due next year looks to be a weapon.....can see that still looking great in 10-15 years time

As for now.....Mk II/III Golf GTI's i think are superb aswell as the old Merc CL's. Can pick them up for peanuts now and have a very fine car which surely over time will only appreciate seeing as the values are at rock bottom right now.

Pistonheads.com have some cracking examples of old cars, some of the values are scary

Old 911's seem to be sensible investments but maybe buying a decent TVR or Noble now might be a shrewd move

Re: Future Classic Cars - What's yours?
If you buy a well looked after 993/964 and run it for a couple of years without anything major going wrong you will sell and get your money back and probably with enough profit to pay for the insurance and repairs in that time. A free Porsche??? Sounds good eh?

I did that with a 3.2 carrera and Im currently doing it with a Ferrari 550. In 20 years cars have made me a net profit, whilst most people drop thousands on depreciation and high insurance for their 'fancy' Range Rover Sports etc.

Re: Future Classic Cars - What's yours?
I've been looking at 964 Porsche 911's from 89-92, Targa ideally - last year they were 12-25k, in the space of a year they've doubled in value. 993's are now 35k plus for anything half decent. Thing is, if you can get one you can run it for a few years, sell it for at least what you paid for it, basically free ownership. I'm fully embracing my midlife crisis.

The alternative? RS60 Boxsters are currently around the 21k mark, and will go down. For that you can get something pristine, 35k on the clock.

sxboy - Ha ha it'll have to be some car for that!

Brands Hatch is only 15 minutes away through winding country roads so i'll just tell my mate i'm popping down the road!

It probably won't be what you're expecting if you just take it round the block. They're at their best when being driven within an inch of their life.

Strap in, hold on tight, and floor it through some winding roads if you get chance.

It will make storm chasing seem very dull.

1982 VW Type 3 (25) Camper van.

Last of the air-cooled vans and now starting to see an increase in value as the Type 1's (Split Screens) and Type 2's (Bay window) now go for silly money.

I do like the Alfa Romeo GTV coupe and the 3.0ltr, gorgeous looking car, but I'd give my left bollock for a Brooklands 280 Capri!!

Re: Future Classic Cars - What's yours?
Oh and just had to take my sisters Fiesta to have her clutch done and mate (I sound like NS now) who owns that garage said he'll have his Escort Mexico on the road soon, bright orange with a black stripe.
Reckons it'll be worth around £25,000 when it's finished as it'll be pristine.

Might see if i can have a quick spin in that Quattro :-)

Re: Future Classic Cars - What's yours?
One reason classic car prices are rising is that there is no CGT on any profit made. Add that to a lack of confidence in banks/shares and people realising that you can have an investment you can enjoy, and you have the correct environment for appreciation.

Ignore your MX5s, Minis, Fiestas etc as although good cars, there were just too many made. And as for 'limited editions'...

The real money will be made at the top end of the market. For your budget classic, its more about finding something that will hold its value or offer a little financial gain.

Chances are, a classic will be much cheaper to run than any modern equivalent as insurance and depreciation are the main losses on normal cars.

One of the very last ones made too. Many of those were moth-balled in collections. Your mate is a lucky bloke.
